Let me be clear – I think setting goals and striving to meet them is a vital part of a successful, fulfilling life. In fact, I have the quote “A goal without a plan is just a wish” taped on top of my computer screen at work, to remind myself and my clients of this fundamental fact.
Wishing comes very easily for me. I am a dreamer at heart and usually struggle putting things into action (which is why it took me two full years to start this blog). I used to think I was laid back, fly by the seat of my pants (which I am, in many scenarios), but I’ve learned I function really (REALLY!) well when I have structure – a plan, a list, duties assigned, and expectations of all parties involved.
The catch word right now in goal setting is “S.M.A.R.T.” Setting Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevent, Time-bound goals is what all the cool kids are doing. Well, that’s all fine and dandy for you Type A’s, but where does the ”L" fit in? As in "Life happens?" Setting and striving to meet goals is important in life. But, more importantly, so is stopping to readjust goals along the way when they’re not working or other aspects of your life are suffering. More often than not, we become so caught up in the end result, the finish line - we forget to stop and smell the roses, high five when excited, or barrel roll down grassy hills. Life usually isn’t ever what we expect it to be. It is a constant, ever-changing, ever-evolving phenomenon and we must keep that in mind when we set our goals. Or wish on shooting stars…
